Zhejiang Zheng, one of the traditional genres of Zheng art in China, originated in Hangzhou and became widely popular in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai area. In the 1950s, Mr. Wang Xunzhi, the descendent of Zhejiang Zheng genre, brought Zhejiang Zheng to Shanghai. In the basis of inheriting, he made a series of reform in the performance skills and instrument structure. The development center of Zhejiang Zheng genre gradually shifted to Shanghai, where it had further development and inheritance. Yue’er Gao, one of the typical Zhejiang Zheng music, first appeared in Xian Suo Bei Kao. Mr. Wang’s revision is the most common version now, which well reflects the typical musical structure, melody style and performance skills of Zhejiang Zheng genre, acting as an excellent example for us to understand and comprehend the style characteristic of Zhejiang Zheng genre. Since folk artists began to teach in the universities, traditional art tended to become more systematic and theoretical. Nevertheless, in these short decades, the research of tradition or the transition from the tradition to the modern times is still inadequate. This article will focus on studying and clarifying the origin, the development, and the inheritance vein of Zhejiang Zheng genre. Meanwhile, taking Yue’er Gao for example, the article will research and consider the original music score in Xian Suo Bei Kao, and analyze its musical structure, melody style and performance skills. Through the combination of related documents in several core journals, the article can help people study and understand the evolvement of the music and the genre, which is conductive to better comprehend the style characteristic of Zhejiang Zheng genre.
