The Book of Songs is the first anthology of verse in China, is also a great cultural heritage of the Chinese nation. The language of The Book of Songs is very close to that time of the spoken language, which could reflect the characteristics of ancient Chinese, and which is the important treasure of research ancient Chinese vocabulary. We found that, when reading The Book of Songs, there is a kind of unique word to depict the voice of the people, the things, or the mood and state, which is called mimetic-matte painting word in this article. On the basis of forefathers’ research, this paper would have a systematic and comprehensive statistics and analysis about the mimetic-matte painting word in The Book of Songs. According to the different types of structures, the mimetic-matte painting words are divided into summation tone word, polysyllabic word, additive word and coordinative word. And this article has carried on the detailed elaboration and analysis on it. Through specific research of mimetic-matte painting words of The Book of Songs in the characteristics of semantics, syntax, pragmatics and investigation of its inheritance relationship with modern Chinese, we would reveal the development of ancient Chinese, and provide some data to the research on the history of Chinese vocabulary.
