The Book of Songs collects 305 poems of nearly five hundred years,from early Western Zhou Dynasty to the middle of the Spring and Autumn period,and it is commonly known as "Three Hundred Poems".It is an important work for the language and literature research from the Western Zhou Dynasty to the Spring and Autumn period.Researchers have focused overwhelmingly on the literary and artistic value of the Book of Songs,but very few studies have explored the language value of it.In this thesis,we explore the language value of the Book of Songs from the perspective of word formation.We count,classify and analyze the Disyllabic and Polysyllabic words in the Book of Songs,so that we can understand the Disyllabic and Polysyllabic words better,grasp the characteristics of the Disyllabic and Polysyllabic words in the Book of Songs,and analyze the causes of these words and their internal phonetic and semantic structure.The present study is divided into seven chapters.The first chapter is the Introduction,including three parts: the research object and research status,research methods and research significance,research content.This chapter is mainly to define the concept of "the Disyllabic and Polysyllabic words ",summarize the research achievements of predecessors,and introduce the research framework.The second chapter discusses the criteria of the Disyllabic and Polysyllabic words in the Book of Songs.In this part,we mainly introduce judgement bases,including semantic standard which is a critical judgement,grammar standard,rhetoric standard and word frequency standard.The third chapter through to the sixth chapter are the main body of this thesis.We research and decide the Disyllabic and Polysyllabic words in the Book of Songs into 4 stages: the speech creation stage,the speech to the grammar transition stage,the grammar formation stage,and the rhetoric creation stage.Among them,we have new findings on the phonetic-semantic relations of Duplication Phrase,the similarities and differences of Duplication Phrase and Lianmian Words,the internal semantic relations of Compound Words.In the rhetorical creation part,we find that the cognitive style of the ancient Chinese is an inexhaustible source of new words that are created.The seventh chapter is a summary of this thesis.The research of the Disyllabic and Polysyllabic words in the Book of Songs is beneficial to reviewing on the development of Chinese vocabulary,grasping thecharacteristics of Chinese vocabulary in a specific period,and establishing a solid foundation on the research of the history of Chinese vocabulary.In this thesis,we make use of the most original artificial statistical methods to analyze the Disyllabic and Polysyllabic words in the Book of Songs,combining quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis.It is concluded that some the Disyllabic and Polysyllabic words have existed in the period of the Book of Songs,including a great number of Duplication Phrase.However,the Disyllabic and Polysyllabic words are still in the process of development and solidification.It is in accordance with the rule of Chinese vocabulary that they developed from the monosyllabic words to the Disyllabic and Polysyllabic words.
