The Predecessor of the Bassoon is a sort of Shawm Pipe in central Asia, which was later spread to ancient Greece and transformed into a kind of primitive wind instrument which has two pipes called “Aulos”. In the 40 s of 16 th century, the headmaster of Italian Catholic Monastery Alfranio refined the primitive bassoon and used a U-shaped pipe to connect those two pipes together, which gradually turned into an instrument that was similar to the modern Bassoon. Because the outlook of this instrument was very much like a bundle of firewood, consequently it was named “Fagotte”(which is the Italian word for “firewood”).This thesis mainly discusses the breathing,mouth shapes, fingerings,beating reeds of the bassoon and the instruments that were used in history, and explores the common features through the practical use of these elements in real compositions of bassoon performance.The whole essay can be divided into 3 chapters: Chapter 1 introduces the origin of the bassoon and its development, and the reason why the problems of pitch accuracy and tone qualities are difficult to solve. Chapter 2 introduces the elements that influence the pitch accuracy and tone qualities, which is to say:(1) Breathing.(2) Mouth Shapes.(3) Fingerings.(4) Beating Reeds.(5) Instruments.
