This paper talks about the time-bound and collective characteristics of the arts produced when Yunnan’s ethnic minority culture met the contemporary art in the 1980 s. This unique phenomenon was presented in those oil painting works that were themed on ethnic minorities by Yunnan’s young artists, expressed in the cultural context of western Modernism, and preserved in the personal history of the artists. This paper attempts to discuss the phenomenon in light of their collective art creation, to probe into it in a great depth by contextualizing them back into that entire era, in an effort to present the historical imagery of their creation by examining the artists’ life experiences, the reasons of their creation, and how the works were presented. This paper focuses on analyzing those surviving works in the creation process, and on understanding of the psychological state of the artists as well as their artistic experiences via the means of visitation and investigation. Then, in light of that, by analyzing the approaches, styles, themes, and languages of artistic creation, it is aimed to represent the situation back to those days, filling the missing link in the art history. By examining the values of this very existing phenomenon, and building on the foundation of the specific regional ethnic cultures of Yunnan Province, the end is to uncover its influence and significance on the development of China’s contemporary art.
