Lao She is a writer of complication. Apart from that he praise highly of realism, we should not neglect his relations with modernism literature. Under Chinese and western literature background, Lao She draws lessons directly from western modernism literature. In addition, based on his childhood experience and literature concept, Lao She resonates with individual existence crisis facing absurdity dilemma and self-expression consciousness in modernism literature, which form under the collapse of ration.Taking Lao She’s novels as a whole, modernism mainly influences him in two aspects including the themes of the novels and expression techniques. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter summarizes the Chinese and western modernism literature background in which Lao She was in during his novel writing. Besides, the many reasons why Lao She accept modernism and the meeting point between Lao She and modernism included in his view of literature are also taken into consideration. Based on close reading of the text, the second chapter attempts to analyze the modernism color of Lao She’s novels’themes from the aspects of the consideration of individual’s absurd existence and self-expression features. At the same time, by the fable about group and culture which is organized under the sense of crisis, the chapter will also discuss the novels’combination of modernism and concerns on nation. The third chapter is about the dissection of Lao She’s reception and transformation of modernism in the view of artistic techniques, thus identifying Lao She’s wide literature viewpoint. The fourth chapter studies on the two efforts that Lao She takes to dispel nothing.By the analysis how modernism factors are applied in Lao She’s novels, this thesis concludes that modernism influences Lao She from many sides. On the one hand, not only was he in the Chinese and western modernism literature background, but Lao She also shares the similar feeling with modernism. Those both contributes to his reception of modernism, which is mainly expressed as tragedy experience whose essence is nothing and despair. On the other hand, because of Lao She’s child experience and the social circumstances that Lao She was in, Lao She’s life experience is somewhat different from that of western modernism writers. As a result, the differences appear as Lao She’s nation writing by fable, his filtration in the perspective of artistic style, the construction of ideal characters and humor style constructing on tragedy consciousness and the filter on writing techniques in his novels.
