Photo images animate stories and memories of people all over the world, and remind contemporary people about the past history. When the wave of modern-era seems inescapable, active photo images promote people’s subjectivity formation and self-perception capability. From French consul Auguste Francois(Chinese name: Fang Shu-Ya) who took pictures in Yunnan back to 1899, to nowadays documentary photos with different subjects and varying dimensions that have filled our lives, the influence of photo images is ubiquitous. Even the historical memories of Yunnan, a remote Chinese province, have been significantly affected and altered by photo images during the past century. The present study will explore the establishment of photo images through the perspective of colonists one century ago versus the perspective of Chinese people in the late 1990 s. Meanwhile, the theme of the reconstruction of the past via photo images will also be discussed. Therefore, the present study strives to figure out what kind of images or historical memories related to Yunnan could be animated during the process of establishment or reconstruction of those documentary photos taken at different periods over the past history, and what factors or elements would affect the establishment process of our historical memories. The research approach of the present study includes a text analysis of photo images that are arranged chronologically in a vertical direction, and combines with an analysis of the identity of construction subject and memory content over the past history in a horizontal direction.Photo images animate stories and memories of people all over the world, and remind contemporary people about the past history.
