Calligraphy is the essence of Chinese culture. After thousands of years of tradition and heritage, it is not only just a simple way of writing, but it also contains the cultural spirit which attracts the attentions of international students. With the rapid development of Chinese international education, calligraphy- a representative of Chinese culture, gradually steps into the stage of international Chinese education curriculum.I first read books about calligraphy while learning from calligraphy teachers, which allowed me to deeply understand Chinese calligraphy and culture. I then decided to set international students from the Kunming calligraphy colleges as the research object of this thesis. I participated in lectures, conducted questionnaires, interviewed teachers and used other research methods to learn about the current situation of teaching calligraphy in colleges and universities. The aim of the research is to identify problems and propose corresponding solutions. This thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is an introduction, mainly introducing the research background, significance, research methods and the current status of research. The second part describes the current situation of curriculums, teachers, teaching contents and the learning conditions of international students studying calligraphy in Kunming. The third part identifies the problems of teaching international students calligraphy based on the surveys and interviews. The fourth part recommends solutions based on these issues and finally the fifth part summarizes the findings based on the above study processes. The current teaching conditions for international calligraphy students also needs to solve persistent problems of teaching as well as in-depth teaching. By improving teaching methods, calligraphy education can combine with other cultural studies as a catalyst for improving education in calligraphy education.
