Redefinition Of "Tree" And Its Aesthetic Expression

This article is a theoretical exposition of my creative practice.?The article mainly explains the author’s thinking process of practicing graduation project, and implicitly analyses the concept of ‘tree’ based on the perspective of Semiology, to rethink the definition that popular culture taken for granted and to rebuild understanding and interpretation.In the process of creating sculpture, author processed the nature tree with special material(transparent resin), stitched and replaced some parts, to give the ‘tree’ a new meaning. By using new materials to replace the original parts of tree, especially in practical ways, the author makes it vague and ambiguous in definition of symbol.The article is composed with three chapters to illustrate: the first chapter is a brief overview of meaning and origin of ‘tree’ in Chinese culture, as well as a narrative of international artists’ sculptural performance on ‘tree’, thereby paves the way to the new understanding of its artistic performance; the second chapter mainly refers to the basic of Semiology to analyse the meaning of ‘tree’, seeking a new angle to re‐define the ‘tree’; the third chapter is a elabration of practicing the graduation project, that focus on author’s creative ideas from external aesthetic form composition, material selection to final project assemble, and provide a detail description of creative works.In the author’s work, the post‐processed ‘tree’ is only a symbol in space with no clear directional sign, and it is a ‘new thing’ ready to adopt new definition. The work will render the ‘tree’ in form of ambiguous contradiction to the viewer, leaving novel impression, and making them to rethink the significance and character of symbol existence.
