Toni Morrison is a renowned contemporary American novelist. She wins the 1993 Nobel Prize for literature that makes her become the first African American writer to be so honored. Among her wonderful works, Beloved is considered by the public as the best one. This thesis attempts to make a thorough analysis of the employment of tree image and to explore the triple meanings of tree image and the corresponding growth of Sethe, the heroine of this novel. The theme of Beloved is deepened by the triple meanings of tree image: witness to the unbearable past of the life of black people; sources of healing and comfort; symbol of bright future and pretty hope. In addition, it reveals a deep social significance reflected by tree image and growth of Sethe, that is, only by confronting and understanding the past life can the blacks create a bright future. |
