An Analysis Of The "Jinghua Smoke" From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

《Moment in Peking》 is written by the famous scholar Lin yutang, this novel has an important influence in the word. It describes three families called Zeng, Yao, Niu and their happiness and sadness since Yihetuan movement in 1901 to the Anti-Japanese War broke out in 1937. At the same time, it still shows us the change of Chinese society during the three decades. The characters in the book is numerous, with different personalities and their language usages are also have distinguishing feature, so there is a lot of language choosing phenomenon. Now, the adaptation theory has been used in every field of pragmatics. In this paper, the conversation of 《Moment in Peking》 will be the corpus source, then we Analysis them from the perspective of adaptation theory. The full text is divided into three chapters except the introduction and conclusion, the chapters as follows:The introduction briefly introduces the significance of the selected topic and analyses the feasibility of this article according to the existing research about the topic. Then explains the research methods of this article、the version of 《Moment in Peking》 and the innovation of this article.The first chapter analyses the corpus of 《Moment in Peking》 from the communicative context and linguistic context, to find out the relationship between language choice and contextual adaptation when language communication behavior occurs between characters. The communicative context mainly related to three big factors which is the mental world, the social world and the physical world. Language context is mainly divided into cohesive within the article and cohesive between the articles. Both communicative context and linguistic context, contextual elements contribute to or influence people’s language choice.The second chapter is written from two big aspects, code styles and discourse building components, to study the structural adaptation phenomenon on language structural involved by language choices, including the style and code, word building components, etc. Based on the corpus of 《Moment in Peking》, we focuses on explaining the language structure have adaptability relationship between language adaptation phenomenon and the mental world, social world, physical world and influence the language user to choose language.The third chapter starting from the corpus of the 《Moment in Peking》, by analyzing the common pragmatic strategy occurs on the dialogue between characters, to find out the adaptation behind language usage and choice from the perspective of characters in the novel. Verbal communication strategies are the means of language communication which are used by people for specific communication purposes. The language users of 《Moment in Peking》 always are found to use some communication strategies in dialogue. Based on the research, we can prove that they are used them with consciousness.Conclusion is the summary of this paper. Besides the conclusion according to corpus study, it still has some unsolved problems. In this paper, there are a lot of shortcomings, but I hope to provide some thoughts for later study.
