Moment in Peking is a very famous and great English novel written by LinYutang, the famous writer, translator and scholar. The aim of the novel is tointroduce the traditional Chinese culture to the westerners. Because of the high levelof literature, Lin Yutang was once nominated for Nobel Prize for literature. The novel includes culture, philosophy, conversations, gossip and so on. Itreveals the great language talent of Lin Yutang. The talent of language reflects in theutterances of Yao Mulan, the heroine of the novel. Yao Mulan is the role of the novelthat Lin Yutang likes best. Because of the skillful utterances, Yao Mulan can besuccessful in communication with others. It is the skillful utterances that make YaoMulan have nearly perfect images. Recently, more and more scholars and researchersstudy the novel and the heroine, Yao Mulan deeply. Most of them do the researchfrom the perspective of culture, philosophy and translation. However, studying thetopic from the perspective of pragmatics is much less. Especially, studying theimages of Yao Mulan from the perspective of Gricean Conversational ImplicatureTheory is even rare. In the process of researching, the author finds that thecommendable images of Yao Mulan have close relation with the utterances she usesand the conversational implicature. Violation of the maxims of Cooperative Principlecan produce conversational implicatures. Yao Mulan can violate more than onemaxim in the same conversation at proper time and the same utterances of her canalso violate more than one maxim at the same time. So, based on GriceanConversational Implicature Theory, the thesis analyzes the utterances of Yao Mulanto reveal the images of her through ten classical conversations. From the juncture of the pragmatic theory and literary utterances, the thesis hasanalyzed the images of the heroine in literary works and has tried to explore the deeprelationship between pragmatic theory and literature. Besides, the thesis has inspiredthe readers with the skillful utterances of heroine to communicate successfully intheir daily life. Mastering the skills of communication can make us succeed in our work, study and life.
