Carson Mc Cullers(1917--1967) is a unique American women writer of 20 th century. Suffering from the pain of torture never stopped in her short life. She had rheumatic fever at age 15 and at the age of 29 she got paralyzed because of three times stroke, but she really created many inspirational works for all mankind.Through Mc Cullers’ three representative works: "The Ballad of the Sad Café", "Reflections in a Golden Eye" and "Member of the Wedding" I analysis the characters and plot in this paper mainly from Freud’s instinct theory point of view to explain how the instinct play the important role in promoting Mc Cullers novel characters, plot development and the creation of author.Love and hate are two basic human emotions and life and death are the most fundamental processes of two states human life. Mc Cullers wrote a song of love and hate or life and death for us by many absurd stories. Mc Cullers has her own unique analytical for love. She resolved to the most primitive features of love, and she also enriches the meaning of love. In the process of love understanding, she also spared no effort to reveal the source of pain. In the complex world, she saw the true face of love and hate, life and death and she also revealed the meaning of life.This paper is divided into five parts:Introduction : I will have a brief introduction on Carson Mc Cullers’ s life and the circumstances of its creation, review Mc Cullers study abroad, as well as the main point of Freud’s instinct theory.The first chapter : I will analyze the human being’s repressed instinct in "The Ballad of the Sad Café," "Reflections in a Golden Eye" and "Member of the Wedding," these three Mc Cullers’ novels and the attention on life instinct from author.The second chapter : I will analyze the human’s death instinct in three Mc Cullers novel, "The Ballad of the Sad Café", "Reflections in a Golden Eye" and "Member of the Wedding," and the relationship between two instincts.The third chapter : From the view of the writer and the reader, I will analyze how and why these two instincts push Mc Cullers novel character and plot development,also why she write her stories.Conclusion: I will conclude that instinct plays an important role in Mc Cullers novel characters and plot and writer’s writing motivation.
