By analyzing the character Cameron in the movie Crash on the basis of Freud’s theories of Psychoanalysis, this dissertation argues that human beings’ instincts are too strong to be defeated, they would be expressed eventually(perhaps in indirect ways). The movie Crash is a 2004 crime drama movie co-written, produced, and directed by famous Canadian writer and director Paul Haggis. It won the best picture award at Deauville movie festival in France in 2005. And in 2006, it won the Oscars for best picture, best original screenplay and movie editing on the 78 th Annual Academy Awards. The movie begins with a seemingly ordinary car crash, and people related. Then, it takes us back to the day before the accident and tells us the stories of the characters. Among the characters, the black TV director was quite representative, and he would be the object of analysis in this dissertation. The main body of this dissertation can be divided into three parts:Chapter one focuses on the personality structure of Cameron. In this chapter, the author is attempting to illustrate that Cameron is defeated by his own instinct from the perspective of Personality structure.Chapter two explores the working of human instinct from the perspective of defense mechanism, with Cameron’s behaviors, words and facial expressions as the objects of analysis.Chapter three is focuses on Cameron’s Eros and Thanatos. All the three chapters prove the same point of view: human instincts are too strong to be defeated.
