This thesis applies Choreocology to the research on the emergence, development and inheriting lineage of the Salpuri Chum, a type of traditional Korean dance. Besides the Introduction, there are five chapters in the main text:The first chapter mainly analyses factors, from both natural and sociocultural environments, which are linked to the emergence of the Salpuri Chum, as well as how this dance-form is created by its dance community:the Kisaengs in theKwonbon, a special entertainment and educational institution, during the late 19th and the early 20th century. The second and third chapters focus on the changes, happened to the Salpuri Chum’s dance community and how the dance itself evolved in both its form and function when the Korean Peninsula was experiencing radical social transformations. The fourth chapter combed the inheriting lineages of the Salpuri Chum after its emergence, and expressed how South Korea’s Important Intangible Cultural Properties legislation has helped the protection and inheritance of the Salpuri Chum. The last part is the conclusion, in which the writer puts forward arguments based on previous analysis, and provides advice on the inheritance of ethnic traditional dance in China.
