Shanghai Polytechnic Institution is one of the representative body during the late Qing dynasty that promotes the spread of Western knowledge. One of its measures that has a significantly affect is The Chinese prize essay scheme.Since 1886, Shanghai Polytechnic Institution invited officials ruling to set questions contain Westernization,national prosperity,military buildup,arrange soldier’s pay and so on.The scheme held four times a year during spring,summer,autumn and winter seasons.Since 1889 also held in spring and autumn special scheme,Beiyang minister and nanyang minister set questions.The Chinese prize essay scheme adapt the actual needs of the Westernization Movement, and become a major forum for bureaucracy and intellectuals to discuss, so it got the support of all parties and make a contribution for the spread of Western knowledge.The scheme has been implemented until 1908, sustained more than twenty years. Wang Tao, Zhaoyuan Yi gathered the written exercises during 1886-1894 with the question,remark,prize situation together to edit and publish a book named the written exercises of Shanghai Polytechnic InstitutionIn this paper, the main content is divided into four chapters:The first chapter explores the creation and operation of Polytechnic Institution and Chinese prize essay scheme; second chapter analyzes the situation of the winners and the questions; third chapter discusses the winners’thought about western knowledge; fourth chapter analyzes the influence of the Chinese prize essay scheme.The first chapter reviews the Polytechnic Institution in detail to create its initial operations, focuses contribution of Shou Xu Tao Wang in the development of Shanghai Polytechnic Institution, and then discuss the creation of The Chinese prize essay scheme and analyze its basic characteristics. Finally, by discussing the examination system of the academies in shanghai,we try to explore the social basis of the The Chinese prize essay scheme.The second chapter analyzes the winners native place, the basic situation of educational experience, future development, we intended to explore the winners’ historical influence. Then the discuss the situation of the officials and question analyze why customs officials become a major supporter of the scheme, and to explore the formation of the new domain of discourse during Westernization movementChapter Three discuss the winners’thought about western knowledge by four aspects:View of change,the relationship between China and the West,the relationship between Chinese knowledge and the Western knowledge, the burgeon of new ideas to explore new ways of thinking that deal with the situation and the knowledge environment in the new world, and show the winners’ position in the history of modern Chinese thought.Chapter IV analyzes the influence of the Chinese prize essay scheme from three aspects:the spread of the written exercises,the Impacts on the winners and Imperial examination.The main part lies in the public in newspapers and inclusion of Statecraft and knitting books.In the summary, by the overall analysis of The Chinese prize essay scheme, combined with the theory of "transition time",we explore the environment thought before the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, and explores the influence of western China’s way.
