Since the Eastern Han Dynasty, Indian Buddhism has formally introduced to China and become an important means of communication; thus, the Chinese and foreign Buddhists translate a large scale of Buddhist scriptures into Chinese; most of the classic original is created with Sanskrit and India’s other ancient languages, namely, the typical inflectional language, so translating the Buddhist scriptures created in inflectional language to isolating language Chinese is wonders not only in the Chinese cultural history but also in the ancient cultural history of the world. In the remote ancient India, Maurya Dynasty carried forward Buddhism, and made it become a worldwide religion and it has deeply influenced the nation and culture of surrounding countries even the whole world. Buddhism is a kind of ideology and a kind of cultural phenomenon or is an important language phenomenon from the perspective that today people consider Buddhist scriptures as the research corpus and has left an important effect in the development of the culture, language and history of China.Saddharmapundarika-sutra or Lotus Sutra is a representative works of the Mahayana Buddhist scriptures. In the classic, teaching one makes all living creatures receive enlightenment and the other three teachings aim to guide people to enlighten themselves since people don’t have unripe roots of wisdom. The classic is the main basis of Tiantaizong. Variant pronunciation word is a common language phenomenon in Chinese and many scholars have studied it since ancient time. Lotus Sutra includes seven volumes, 28 classes, and a total of over sixty-nine thousand words, and has rich language materials; it is the classic of Mahayana Buddhism and its profound meanings have brought huge impact to its researchers, therefore, there are a great number of scholars study it every year. In addition, the researches of variant pronunciation words involved in the literatures mostly are phonology researches centering wordbooks and lexicographical workbooks, and there is no systematic discussion. Variant pronunciation word is a common in Buddhist scriptures, but for a long time, there has been no scholar specially researches a great deal of variant pronunciation words in Lotus Sutra in one book; moreover, most previous researches on variant pronunciation words were limited to wordbooks and lexicographical workbooks. Thus, the study on Lotus Sutra from the perspective of variant pronunciation word is one of the innovation points of the thesis.Cross-discipline research is also one of the conditions that new research directions emerge; more meticulous and new research directions spark in constant impact and collision between disciplines. The study of variant pronunciation words in Lotus Sutra is just the starting; through people’s discussions and researches, the researches on variant pronunciation words in Buddhist studies will also gradually be back on track. In this paper, the author believes the variant pronunciation words’ proportion in Lotus Sutra is as high as about one over ten, but repeat rate is very high. In the thesis, the author selects and studies seventy-one variant pronunciation words in Lotus Sutra, these words appeared in this book about five thousand two hundred times,indentifies their pronunciation by looking up information, and confirms the real meanings of Buddhist scriptures by determining the literal meanings on the basis of pronunciation. In his works titled Wuming’s Views of Nirvana, Seng-chao said, “the way of nirvana is lonely and vast; and it cannot be expressed by words; besides, it is subtle and has no fixed form, so it cannot be felt....The Buddhist scriptures mention “the ones who really get nirvana are not based on oral teachings.” The author’s study also is only limited to the surface and more deep connotations are to be explored; besides, more real meanings contain in the hidden treasure of Buddhist scriptures need scholars to explore and discover.
