As the most important place for Buddhists to have a rest or hold religious activities, temple plays an important role in the history of Buddhism. The number of temples can reflect the development of Buddhism in different historical periods; from the geographical distribution of the temple can reflect the development of Buddhism in different parts and the regional focus option in the spread of Buddhism, style changes of temple’s architectures can usually reflect the sinicization history of Buddhism. But in the process of building the temple, there is a phenomenon has to mention, for giving up the house to temples. It means that the rich Buddhist believers donate their homes for Buddhists to live. This phenomenon appeared in the beginning of Buddhism, and with the Buddhism’s spread to China, it also be rooted and played an important role in temple’s construction. The main content of this paper is to research the phenomenon of giving up the house to temples in Sui and Tang Dynasties, in order to solve some related problems, and get some harvests from the related academics.From the structure of this paper, the full text can be divided into three parts: introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction mainly focuses on the reasons why choose this paper topic, the contents and the significances. What’s more, the introduction also summarize the researching gains and losses that researched by the academics at present.The body part consists of five chapters. The first chapter mainly discusses the origin of giving up the house to temples. As everyone knows, Buddhism originated in India, so this chapter divided the phenomenon of giving up the house to temples into two parts: foreign and China, to discuss with. From the foreign’s giving up the house to temples leads to the giving up the house to temples in China, and pay attention to the period of Han Dynasty to the Northern and Southern Dynasties, in order to make a clear context and good account of antecedents and consequences, as well as the necessary groundwork for the followings. The second and the third chapter’s Contents consist of three parts. The first part mainly to gather the information of the temples that transformed by houses in Sui and Tang Dynasties. The result of this part’s work will be respected in the second and the third chapters in the form of tabulation. The main contents of the second part and the third part are to analyze the information of the temples collected in the first part. The second part mainly on the times when they gave up their houses to temples and the reasons why they gave up their houses to temples. The third part mainly on the characteristics of the geographical distribution that the temples transformed by houses, as well as analyze the reasons. In the process of researching the phenomenon of giving up the house to temples, the person who gave up his house to temple, his reason why he gave up his house usually made a great influence on the temple’s name, location and size. Therefore, the content of the fourth chapter mainly focuses on the reasons why people gave up their houses to temples and the stratums that the people who gave up their houses to temples belong to. It is also important to make a reasonable assessment of the development of Buddhism in Sui and Tang Dynasties. In Sui and Tang Dynasties, gave up the house to temples became more and more popular. This trend was not only limited to some Buddhists, but involved all stratums of the society. Not only limited to the country’s political, economic or cultural center, but spread to every corner. Not only limited to one or a certain period, but went through Sui and Tang Dynasties. In Sui and Tang Dynasties, this phenomenon could appeared in large numbers also had its reasons, so the main content of the fifth chapter is discussing the reasons why this phenomenon could appeared in these two dynasties.The content in the conclusion part mainly summaries the full text, in order to express the main idea of each chapter above.
