A Study Of Zhou Zizhi 's "Bamboo Slips"

Zhou Zizhi, also known as Zhupo, is author of Zhupo Lyrics which consists of156poems. Integrating fresh expressions with profound meanings, Zhupo Lyrics is of high artistic value. Although Zhupo is an important lyrics poet in Nandu period, his lyrics have not been widely concerned in academic circles, thus remains much room and potential to further research on them comprehensively. Therefore, beginning with the historical data of Zhupo’s life and combining with the prevailing political, social and cultural environment, the author makes thorough and meticulous research on the representative lyrics of Zhupo Lyrics through analysis, discussion and comparison, trying to show overall artistic style of Zhupo Lyrics.This thesis consists of four parts. Chapter one introduces the life story and the thought origin of Zhou Zizhi. This chapter mainly discusses three problems:life story of Zhouzizhi;his ambivalence between participating in politics and withdrawing from society and the influences of the prevailing political environment and literary style on his literary creations; a brief description of Zhupo’s Literary Thoughts. Chapter two mainly talks about the emotional connotation of Zhupo Lyrics. As an art style of emotional outlet, lyrics often contain the unique life experiences and the emotional ups and downs of the poet. This chapter will categorize Zhupo’s lyrics and discuss them respectively. In his lyrics, he may feel sorry for being farewell, sign for his own life experience, be said for living home and turning old, desire of living off the mundane and eulogize the beautiful flowers and trees, all of which demonstrates his rich emotional world. Chapter three focuses on the artistic style of Zhupo Lyrics. Since the research on the artistic style of Zhupo Lyrics is not thorough enough, in this chapter, the author will discuss Zhupo Lyrics from four perspectives:the form features, the selection and application of images, language arts, and diversified styles. This chapter will echo with chapter two so as to better show the artistic appeal and style characteristics of Zhupo Lyrics. The fourth part is a conclusion. In this part, Zhupo Lyrics will be put in the integral environment of Nandu era so as to explore the relationship between Zhupo Lyrics and Nandu lyrics as well as find out the subtle similarities hidden behind there seemingly different styles.
