Hu Shi, modern scholars, poets, historians, writers, philosophers. He studied extensively and achieved success in philosophy, politics, literature, education, textology, and ethics. His extraordinary life strived for the original intention that transforms the poor and backward state in China. He believed the liberation of people’s thought is the chief way to achieve western modernization and the first step to liberate people’s thought is the realization of individual liberty. In order to realize individual liberty, individuals should be rescued from feudalism. He attempted to improve Chinese society with pragmatism. With a series of practice, his views of ethics on politics, economy, education plentifully contain the thought of pragmatism. His thinking contains plentiful ethical thought. He advocated constitutionalism with the characteristics of democracy and liberty in politics; With the slogan "Defeat poor by industry", he advocated the development of national industry and commerce in economy; In education, he suggested replacing the classical style of writing by modern Chinese vernacular and he promoted the equality between men and women in domestic ethics. Hu Shi’s practice, under the thought of pragmatic ethics, can offer beneficial resources of theories and practice for the construction of socialist spiritual civilization in our country.
