Arthur Thomas Hatto is one of the leadingpioneers of Western epic scholars. This dissertation tries to introduce Hatto’sachievements that we can make use of.Refereeing to the articles about Hatto’s achievements, by carefully analyzing Hatto’seducation background, the present paper outlines Hatto’s scholarly accomplishmentvia the following facts: Hatto did a lot of research on Epic Manas and published manyarticles according to the oral dictated text of Epic Manas that Chokan ChingisovichValikhanov and V.V.Radloff collected and recorded; He translated the Oral dictatedtext of Epic Manas into English，his The Memorial Feast for K k t y-Khan and TheManas of Wilhelm Radloff was published in1977and1990, Hatto’s efforts made thestudies on epic Manas spread to western academic circles; He proposed the LondonSeminar on Epic and invited epic scholars to participate the seminar to make progresswith the theme of epic poetry, edited two volumes of Heroic and Epic poetry,provided documents for future academic research. Developing a general theory ofheroic poetry in ‘Towards an anatomy of heroic and epic poetry’ is his another greatachievement.A.T.Hatto was an influential scholar, his work promoted a new stage of developmentfor Heroic/epic poetry.
