This paper is based on such a phenomenon that under the background of rising aging population, the average life expectancy of the elderly in China is significantly increased, but the healthy life expectancy has not increased. We need to seek a more scientific and healthy way of providing for the aged through the analysis and explanation of this phenomenon.First of all, this paper summarizes the overall health of the elderly population in China from the four dimensions of age, gender, marital status, and urban and rural differences. Through the statistical analysis of the sixth census data we can find that the health condition of the old people in our country becomes worse with the increase of the age. Its forms include decline in the proportion of healthy elderly population but increase of the disability’s; although the average life expectancy of women is higher than men, in fact he health of older men is better than that of older women in the same age group at any age; old people in city have highest healthy level, the township is the second, and the worst is in the countryside; the health status of the elderly with a spouse is better than that of the elderly alone. Secondly, in view of the phenomenon that the life expectancy of the elderly is not high, this paper analyzes the reasons from four aspects individually, including slow development of medical and health services, lagging behind the construction of the pension service system, slow development of the old age sports and lack of health knowledge. In the third part of this paper, firstly, it demonstrates the importance and necessity of developing health care for the elderly, otherwise it reflects the inevitable trend of the development of health care indirectly. And then is analysis of the specific plight of the development of health care. Last is introductions of the development of health care in western countries, hoping to provide reference for China’s health care. The fourth part is the response to the second part, that is ways to realize the health care for the elderly. The author believes that above all, we need to innovate pension service model and turn it into a new model that combines medical care and curing. Next, government and community should improve the physical quality of the elderly through popularizing the old age sports. Thirdly, promoting the elderly characteristic service and playing the subjective initiative of the elderly to realize the value of themselves’. Last but not least, construction of the pension service system should be strengthened to provide a solid guarantee for the elderly. The last part of the article is the author’s summary andthinking about the development of health care for the elderly-- the scientific concept is to pay attention to the non physical needs of the elderly and actively play the subjective initiative of the elderly.
