In response to the demand of traffic information system, it is urgent to apply the means of information technologies in traffic accident analysis. As an essential part of future Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), the deployment of traffic accident in-formation analysis system has been regarded as an effective approach to analyze the large amount of accident data accumulated year by year and promote traffic manage-ment level and decision-making capability. After identifying the deficiencies of traditional traffic safety analysis in the aspect of theory and application, a new framework of system architecture is brought forward based on multi-dimensional data model and spatial visualization. The main research contents are as following: 1. In view of the multi-dimensional features of traffic accidents, the multi-dimensional data model of traffic accident is defined as the core of the system information organization model. The concepts of hierarchy and class are used and two schemas of multi-dimensional data model are put forward based on which the OLAP implementation of multi-dimensional traffic accidents analysis is discussed. 2. In contrast to the simple statistical methods and display functions of the traditional traffic accident analysis systems, a new integration mode of spatial visualization and multi-dimensional analysis is proposed. It puts the results of OLAP in the visualization environment of Geographic Information System (GIS) by the means of data binding which allows the interactive and bidirectional query of digital map and data warehouse. 3. Based on the proposed data model and integration mode, the framework of GIS-based traffic accident multi-dimensional analysis system architecture is put forward and relevant implementation methods and approaches are discussed. The spatial and time distribution of traffic accidents in Chongqing and the contribution of major causal factors are given as proofs of the feasibility of proposed methods, modes and framework. Some reference and suggestions are also given to improve traffic safety status.
