Wearable Computer is a new kind of mobile computing system, which has deep application potential. Only when it develops its rugged performance, like broad temperature, shock resistance, waterproof, and EMI performance, wearable computer can't be really useful in the present application area, such as installation and maintains of complex devices, cargo traffic, fire fighting, and digital soldier system. The study on rugged wearable makes guidance to wearable computer hardware design, and it belongs to the study on some special attribute. Compared with other computer system, rugged wearable has its peculiarity. The paper puts emphasis on the analyses of rugged wearable based on application. Wearable computer has its special working environments, and the special wear form will take direct and indirect effect on the ruggedization problems. Paper abstracts all the factors which affect the performance of rugged wearable. And then, it make a describe model on a certain application. The model is to bring up a method of how to constitute rugged indexes. Follow this method, paper give samples of rugged indexes for wearable computer on device maintains use. The indexes include temperature index, mechanics index, sealing index, anti-corrode index and electromagnetism compatible index. These indexes should be necessary and technical reachable. Further, paper discussed how to design a wearable computer to match the need. Since the special devices are so rare, which are not only small-sized but rugged, we have to take COTS devices and make it stronger to match our need. Paper studies the key device of every rugged index, and increases the rugged level by the way of devices choice and simple design. It brings up reference design guide and design improving solutions. In the last part of this paper, it discussed the problems of thermal design, low temperature design, mechanical design, sealing design, and electromagnetic compatible design.
