In this paper, the multitoning technology is analyzed and studied in detail to improve the image quality of thermal printers. Compared with the traditional digital halftoning technology, the multitoning technology can deal with more gray levels, so it can improve the gray resolution of printer devices and produce finer images than traditional halftoning technology does. Firstly, the work principle of the thermal printer is analyzed , and the idea that the multi-level gray output can be realized in thermal printer is proposed. Secondly, based on the study of the digital halftoning technology, this paper put forward the multitoning technology to improve the output image quality. Finally, multi-level error diffusion algorithm, multi-level multi-scale error diffusion algorithm, multi-level error diffusion algorithm based on Neural Networks and edge enhancement multi-level error diffusion algorithm are discussed, which can make output images finer and the tone more continuous.
