International Standards Organization (ISO) and International Telecommunications Union (ITU) released the unified standard of picture and video coding algorithm in 1980s. In the past 20 years, multimedia communication was developed rapidly worldwide, and was introduced to new video-information businesses constantly. In coding algorithm of video, a series of standards have been already put out. The latest standard is H.264/AVC that was established finally in 2003. This standard has adopted a series of algorithms which were improved from the previous versions. Its aim is at offering very good video quality and realizing higher coding efficiency and succinct expression form. Under the same condition, the coding efficiency of H.264/AVC has been improved by nearly 50% compared with H.263 and MPEG-4, and has better network friendship.As to high-efficient video communication, it is only one part to improve the efficiency of coding as much as possible. Another equally important task is to deal with the error and loss of data in the communication network. Because video communication is sensitive to delay time, it is not good to adopt network protocol on the basis of retransmission mechanism to ensure no mistake occurring intransmission. In addition, compressed video data flows would be damaged easily by transmission errors and mistakes, because of using prediction coding and Variable Length Coding (VLC) extensively in video coding. Therefore, the technology of error control and concealment becomes especially important in video communication systems.This thesis presents three main parts of author's research work:First, further research on H.264 is carried on and all kinds of relevant technologies that H.264 standard adopts are studied.Second, through reading extensively the references and materials concerning H.264, it has almost not found the documents carrying on system analysis in an all-round way about error control and concealment technology since H.264/AVC standard has been recommended. Hence, the work in this respect is carried to offer valuable materials for error control and concealment algorithms, and lay a good foundation further for future work. In this paper is explained in detail the error control and concealment technologies that are relatively often adopted in video communication systems. The error control and concealment technologies with the overall system analysis in the H.264/AVC standard are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of the technologies are pointed out. How to use the technologies in different situations are put forward.Third, real-time video likely to suffer from error burst in motion channel, H.264/AVC standard puts forward from Flexible Macroblock Order (FMO) that can overcome transmission errors. Some inspiration has be raised and a new kind of coding algorithm, say, Macroblock Interlace Scan, is proposed, which has greater error recovery ability. The algorithm has been proved through artificial experiments.
