With the characteristic of the free software and open source software,The Linuxis popular more and more, and is used widely in the calculation of science, electroniccommerce, parallel calculation, electronics management, extended education etc.Linux is always poor in desktop application, but Linux desktop develop very quicklyin the last few years. The Linux desktop operation system is used widely by thegovernment.thus, testing the performance of the Linux desktop operation system anddeveloping the benchmark's tool have the important research significance andpractical values. This text is on the basis of the studying the current situation and existing problemof this respect to analyze both at home and abroad, including the performancemethodology,Micro-benchmark and Macro-benchmark.Micro–benchmark test isbased on the characteristic of some aspects, such as CPU,memory,I/O,operationsystem,network,but Macro-benchmark test computer performance as a whole.Thistext also analyze the present status of Linux performance test. many Open Sourcedevelopers of the Linux Open Source Community is applying themselves to testingLinux to improve the performance of Linux, thus some performance test tools ofLinux is existed in the Open Source Community. But these tools is mostly on the basisof Micro-benchmark and fit to some given condition and need. Linux have manymicro-function to measure,so it is difficult in testing all Linux performance base onMicro-benchmark method. Considering the oneself characteristics of the Linuxdesktop operation system and the test's possibility,I decide to test the Linux desktopoperation system as a whole system basing the theories of Macro-benchmark.After investigating the existing computer system performance test standard,Isummarize briefly a main standard and parameters synopsis that measures the Linuxdesktop system, bring forward using workload to simulating the system's actualwork, use workload as the atom unit of test. So,use these particular workload'sresponse time, the CPU utilization etc. as parameters to measure the Linux desktopoperation system performance. How to design workload aiming at the Linux desktop operation system oneselfcharacteristics? The Linux kernel is the most core of Linux, the kernel performance isleading to the performance of Linux desktop operation system directly. The Linuxkernel is made up of the Process Scheduler Subsystem, the Memory ManagerSubsystem, the Virtual File System Subsystem, the Inter-Process Communication...
