With the development of information technology, flat panel display technique has gotten many applications and much more development in recent years, among them the development and application of liquid crystal display technology are the most. However, LCD is passive light device, it does not emit light. So it needs other lighter to display pictures. Therefore, the backlight (also called backlight module) plays an important role in liquid crystal display.Currently, LCD and backlight module are one of the main parts of small size electronic products such as: handset, mobile phone ...etc. And the backlight module which are used by these electronic products are mostly composed of light emitting diode (LED) and edge backlighting LGP system , so we also call it edge backlight module. Whether the design of the backlight module is good or bad determines the display quality of liquid crystal display in small size electronic products.The design of LGP (light guide panel) is a vital technique to the design of backlight module. The research of the backlight module design has been developing very quickly abroad in recent years, but it still is blank on this aspect in mainland of china. It is very difficult to find detailed materials related to this kind of design technology because it belongs to the commercial secret of foreign enterprise. Therefore it is very significative to carry out the research work on the design of backlight module to break technical blockage of foreign enterprise.This thesis reviewed firstly the present development of backlight module technique and expatiated the construction of edge backlight module of handset, its physical model, the function and design principles of each module. At the same time ,we commented on the merit and shortcoming of all kinds of design methods. We also used computer to do some simulation to help us to research on its design principle more deeply .We also made use of the xxxx type handset sample provided by Vtech Communication Equipment Limited Company and did some computational simulation and analysis on the design of its edge backlight module more deeply about three design methods: rough surface -. diffusion dots and micro structure <> In the end, we got some useful design methods and research results of edge backlighting LGP of the edge backlight module of handset, namely the density of diffused dots is a important factor to determine luminance brightness uniformity and percentage of light transmission of LGP surface. For printed diffused dots, it is still a primary factor which determines the total wastage.Managing to control the density of diffused dots is a main approach to make the light transmit ahead and up in LGP effectively. We also wrote computer programme for carrying through simulation design. We have gotton the design parameter for improving on LGP of the xxxx type handset. In a way, it has practical meaning on how to increase the brightness and uniformity of handset LCD.The creative idea of this thesis is that we are the first explorer to use ASAP commercial software to develop design programme of edge backlighting module of handset LCD in mainland of china and acquired the design ideas and methods of LGPof the edge backlight module for handset.
