Personal Handy-phone System(PHS) is the standard by public wireless communication that Japan made, belongs to the second generation of mobile communication system with GSM that is used extensively at present and narrowband CDMA. In 1995, PHS system that operator and every large communication Company of Japan develop jointly, put into commerce run formally. In 1997, after PHS entered China, it grows rapidly, by the end of December of 2004, user's quantity is up to 65 million. At present, more than 10 countries and regions offer PHS service in the whole world, advanced technology and remarkable concept of PHS have already been accepted extensively.First of all, this paper introduces the historical origin of PHS system and current situation of the development in all countries and areas in the world, analyzes the technological characteristic and advantage of PHS system, and launch the situation in the domestic business. Further investigate basic conception of PHS system and, to the basic structure of PHS system, the radio interface, protocol layer and signal procedure.Secondly, this paper deals with the technology of PHS mobile station(PS). It describes the basic functions of PS, analyzes the flow of operation control including calling, paging and handover procedure etc. It discusses the applications on wireless network, SMS and GPS etc., gives an overview of measurements targets of PS.And then, this paper provides a implementation method of PS, based on RENESAS's baseband IC M64174. Regarding RENESAS's scheme as the platform, the design of carrying on the hardware system and software system is analyzed, explains the operation principle and representative circuits of baseband chip, RF module, memory manage module, power manage module, audio module and man-machine interface model, probes into the whole frame of the software system and implementation method, provides the application instance of PS to prove the design scheme, presents the implementation method of PIM card and PHS/GSM dual mode terminal.Finally, this paper expects the trend of PS technology in the 3G era in the future.
