With the development of Internet and wireless communications, digital images are widely used in all kinds of multimedia services. Image compression technology has been developed and becoming mature with the development of information theory and requirement of information intercommunion. The basic theory of image compression origin of Shannon's information theory in late 40s years of the 20th century. The early source coding methods, such as Shannon coding method, Huffman coding method, Arithmetic coding method and so on, are all based on above theory. It's analyzed that there are better correlations between neighbor pixels inside source image data. Better compression ratios could be reached through transformations from space field to frequency field. Some experiments have proved that Discrete Cosine Transformation and Discrete Wavelet Transformation are two effective methods for image compression.
