IPv4 is used in the internet nowadays. It has been used for 20 years, and inthese years, much success has been made by it. But as it is used in more andmore wide area, IPv4 faces greater difficult. The biggest one of them is that it'saddress space is nearly exhausted, especially in Asia, in China. IPv6 wasdeveloped specifically to address these deficiencies. And IPv6 also supportsimpler address design and handling at the IP layer, simpler routing, better QoSand greater security. It is obvious that it will be a long time for IPv6 to beapplied in all the internet. And it has been standardized only at its first step.There are many new characters being researched and designed. Much work hasto be done for IPv6's development. This article is designed then.The principal content of this article is "IPv6 Packet Filtering andForwarding ASIC" based on "High Performance IPv6 Router Basic Plan andTesting System". The blueprint is designed according to the request of networkequipment testing standard. The software and hardware are designed dependingon the network condition and request of technique.There are 4 parts in this article.The first part fixes on the scheme of IPv6 Packet Filtering and ForwardingASIC based on High Performance IPv6 Router Basic Plan and Testing Systemaccording to the condition of IPv6's development. The blueprint of IPv6 PacketFiltering and Forwarding ASIC is decided after Network Processor and ASIChave been compared and NP is not used here for the request of the systemperformance. "Tunnel+ NAT-PT" is used here as the mean transition strategybased on analyzing and comparing among Dual-stack, IPv6 over IPv4 tunnelingand Protocol Translation. FPGA is used to take place of ASIC for its flexibility,high speed, high integration and low-price. IPv6 Packet Filtering andForwarding ASIC is the core of the IPv6 packet filtering and forwarding board.And it is the mean different from the IPv4 router in system level. The mainobject of this article is decided in this part: 1, To get the filtering and forwardingstrategy of the packet by analyzing the source and destination addresses. 2, IPheader processing, searching and forwarding design of the system. 3, FPGAfunctions realizing.In the second part, IPv6 Packet Filtering and Forwarding ASIC is designedin detail according to the request of the functions and performance of HighPerformance IPv6 Router Basic Plan and Testing System.
