Recently broadband wireless access technologies are rapidly gaining popularity, andsecurity issues in them are of much concern. As the early wireless technology emergingin the market, Wireless LAN (WLAN) has its speciality and generality, so it makes greatsense to study it in depth. In the thesis, security threats and requirements of WLAN are addressed, flaws ofsecurity mechanisms based on WEP specified in IEEE 802.11 are studied in detail, enhanced security solution named Robust Security Network specified in IEEE 802.11iis analyzed. It is also developed about security threats, requirements and mechanisms in3GPP-WLAN interworking system. Research harvests on this issue are in shortnowadays, but it may become a new hot topic in the future and attract more attention. At last, comparisons are made of security mechanisms between WLAN and WMAN(Wireless Metropolitan Area Network). Some security flaws are found in IEEE 802.16:the data protection solutions based on DES runs lack of replay prevention and integrityprotection; authentication and key management protocol also has weakness of biddingdown attack, replaying DoS attack, no efficient re-authentication, and PKI employmentdifficulty, some advice is provided to solve these problems.
