With the development of E-home, it's a hotspot of how to design a residential gateway which can make the home appliance to be intelligent, to connect to the network, and be controlled remotely. Based on the research of the related technology of residential gateway available in the world, a new design of residential gateway based on SIP protocol is put forward in this paper.Based on the study of SIP protocol and the possibility of the application of such protocol in the residential gateway, a new type of residential gateway based on SIP protocol is proposed. Then the platforms of hardware and software are constructed respectively. In the hardware design, the micro-processer W90N740 applying ARM7TDMI core as its CPU is used and the design of its peripheral circuit is discussed. In order to provide the implementation of SIP (Session Initialize Protocol) with software support in the bottom layer, an embedded uCLinux operation system is transplanted into the residential gateway. In the software design, the SIP protocol stack, the network server based on it and the implementation of the embedded web server are analyzed in detail. At last the SIP user agent procedure is designed in Personal Computer(PC) to debug the function of SIP server that embedded in the residential gateway, and the interaction between SIP server and SIP user agent is analyzed in detail.The fields of the paper involve multiple techniques of electron, computer, ARM micro control unit, embedded operation system and SIP protocol. The application of SIP protocol in this embedded residential gateway not only solves the problems such as naming, as well as moving of home intelligent appliances, but also enhance the gateway's expansibility to link all kinds of information appliances and ability to be controlled remotely. Overall the paper has referenced value to the residential gateway research at present.
