With the rapid development of communication techniques, the interconnection and integration between heterogenous networks is becoming necessary. Users need a unified communication platform that offers different network services to reduce repeated investment, standardize the management over multi-networks, and, more important, connect heterogenous networks together. Compact PCI bus is an Industrial bus standard designed for telecommunication devices. It offers rapid and reliable interconnection between modular network boards. This thesis focuses on the research and implementation of a Compact PCI based communication platform for real-time systems.Firstly, the controlling method of the communication platform is evaluated and analyzed thoroughly, and so is its computing environment. Based on intensive compareison between centralized control and distributed control, a conclusion is made that a distributed control over Compact PCI bus be implemented. Then, on the selection of embedded software developing platform, GNU Linux is chosen for its low cost and efficiently shortened software developing duration. Above all, the design of glueless transition from Linux kernel network devices to CPCI bus makes us spend less time modifying real-time system kernel while gaining best communicating effect. While reforming CPCI bus transfer to network data transfer, the thesis brings forward and implements "transfer without interference", registration and management of boards, Hot-Swap, etc. When compared to current solutions, these implementations not only inherit the characteristics of real-time, high efficiency and scalability, but decrease the complexity of Hardware design and real-time Operating System design as well.
