In 21 century,with the development of information technique,every calling is setting to develop their own information management systems,which can change old-timey management mode and improve work efficiency.As an important department of the country, the railroad freight industry also begins to develop information management to reduce management cost and improve competition capability.The advanced 3-layer distribution technique is used in the railroad freight management system according to the actual circumstance of freight management of ChengDu railroad department.The research and application of management information system in railroad freight industry can make the management stuff relieved from the boring handwork, which can save human resources to some extent; on the other hand it embodies the requirement of the high efficiency and practicability of the railroad freight management and also temporizes the information of railroad freight management.The paper primarily focuses on the following contents:(1) The entire scheme of Management Information System in railroad freight Industry is put forward according to the actual circumstance of freight management of ChengDu railroad department. The scheme includes two stages. At the first stage, the LAN system is built based on Intranet, and which is the emphases of the entire system. At the second stage, the Wide Area system is addressed which is based on Internet/Intranet.The freight management work in ChengDu railroad department is taked by 4 correlative units which are the preservation and transportation company of ChengDu railroad department, southern goods yard of ChengDu, GuangHan management department of train which is provided by themselves, MianZhu goods yard. The LAN systems of the four units are constructed and the corresponding software subsystems are developed at the first stage of the entire system. The Wide Area network system based on Internet/Intranet is constructed at the second stage of the entire system, which makes four respective sub-systems be an organic integar. So a railroad freight management system with complete function and easy operation is successfully constructed.(2) The advanced 3-layer distribution structure in the railroad freight management system is discribled in the research. And the use of 3-layer distribution structure in PowerBuilder is emphasized.(3) The software structure of middle layer application server based on COM/COM+ technique in 3-layer distribution system is presented. The middle layer application server program of ChengDu railroad freight management system is successfully developed, which improve the software efficiency greatly and strenthen the software expansibility.(4) The database construction of railroad freight management system is successfully completed. For large information storage, management and exchangeare involved, we create the database for preservation and transportation company of ChengDu railroad department, ChengDu southern goods yard database, the database for GuangHan management department of train provided by themselves, and MianZhu goods yard database. The safety design of the system database is also completed. All of these improve the system reliability and network security greatly.(5) We use Windows 2000 Server operation system based on NT structure as development platform and an orient-object visual program language PowerBuider 8.0 as primary development tool to complete the software design and code compiling of railroad freight management system.
