Both the wireless data market and the Internet are growing very quickly and are continuing to reach new customers. The explosive growth of the Internet has fuelled the creation of new and exciting information services. Because of fundamental limitations of power and form-factcr, mass-market handheld devices tend to have less powerful CPUs and memory, restricted power consumption, and smaller displays. Similarly, because of fundamental limitations of power, available spectrum, and mobility, wireless data networks tend to have less bandwidth, more latency, and less connection stability.WAP is positioned at the convergence of three rapidly evolving network technologies, wireless data, telephony, and the Internet. The WAP gateway is a key component for connecting the wireless data network and Internet. It is very important to research and implementation a high available WAP gateway.In this paper, it is discussed about all the technologies for realizing a WAP gateway. Based on the analysis of WAP stack protocol, a solution using multi-threading of Linux to handle WAP stack state machines is given. We describe the details about thread scheduling, list accessing control, and content converting. This paper introduces the WAP security architecture based on WPKI. The end to end security problem between wireless user and web server is analyzed. Based on real mobile devices and running WAP gateways at the mobile operator, the problem of how to distinguish server certifications and its solution are discussed. Because of being the agency for all wireless user to access Internet, the performance of WAP gateway is very important. The performance optimization solution base on Linux kernel module is also discussed.The architecture of WAP is complex. And the technical of wireless data network is rapidly evolving. In this paper, the key components of WAP gateway are discussed to realize. We will continue work on this field to provide a full functional WAP gateway.
