Visualization, computer animation and virtual reality are the three researching focuses in the field of computer graphics. The technology of digital city is the focus of the technology of the virtual reality. The core technology of the visualization, computer animation and virtual reality is three-dimensional graphics. Currently, the three-dimensional graphics is widely used in many fields. OpenGL is undoubtedly the one of the best three-dimensional graphics standard. It has the function of GL and it is open for multifold hardware flats and multifold operating systems. It has great performance. Currently, there are some problems in the fields of the digitizing city with OpenGL, such as the slow speed of system operation, the high demand for the hardware and software environment, the simpleness of the illumination model, the difficult of building models, the coarseness of models in OpenGL. These problems bring too many difficulties to the quality of the VR system to satisfy the visual demands of the VR system users. The thesis mainly aims at the problems of the illumination model and the translation of the model data, and realizes the moduls of the illumination model and the translation of the model data. The moduls can control the complicate illumination model and translate external model data of 3ds and DXF. These moduls have applied in the project of Zhujiang New City. The thesis consists of 7 chapters. Chapter 1 is the technology background and my work in the project. Chapter 2 is the brief introduction of VR, digital city and OpenGL. Chapter 3 detailedly introduces the partition and the function of the moduls. Chapter 4 researches some correlative technologies in the field of the digital city with OpenGL. Chapter 5 researches and realizes the technology of the illumination model. Chapter 6 researches and realizes the translation of the external model data. The final chapter is the conclusion.
