IC card makes use of Integrated Circuit located on the card to record and transfer information. It is a good way to put personnel information into management imformation network and get the needed result. As an information storing tool with high reliability and good security, IC cards also have much greater capacity than magcards. Besides being used in all domains that magcards do their work, IC cards provide other specialities that magcards do not. Because of this reason, IC cards show their predominance in offline operation transacth online data consistency keeping and so on. It will take the place of the magcard and be widely used in all kinds of information management fields such as finance and commerce. IC cards must have a great development in the future.Being interface device of IC cards, the IC card read-write terminal is necessary in all IC card information management systems. We need all kinds of IC card read-write terminals to meet the different requirement of application systems. Besides fulfilling the base function of IC card data reading and writing, IC card read-write terminals also need other functions such as collected data transferring user command inputting and display message outputting control interface providing data encrypting and so on. To design a read-write terminal with needed functions and excellent performance is a key to composing an efficient IC card management application system.This paper introduces the designing of a new type IC card read-write terminal mainly. The terminal is a MCU embedded application system. First of all, proceeding with the International Standard of IC cards, the paper has introduced the reading and writing technique of IC card data. On the base of SLE4442-a kind of Smart Card with Security Logic made by SIEMENS, the paper has specified the software and hardware realization of IC card data reading and writing. As the UI of read-write terminal, the keyboard and display are needed. The paper has introduced and studied general realization of the keyboard and display in MCU application system and given the scheme that adapts to the read-write terminal. As the whole management system is a distributing system consisted by the upper computer and lower read-write terminals, the problem comes down to communication technology also. The paper has studied and realized the communication between the PC and multi-MCU. The network controlling of embedded system is a new technology nowadays. The paper has recommended the general method of embedded system network controlling, and puts forward a simple and feasible plan. In addition, we have brought forward a multi-CPU architecture thinking to framethe whole embedded system structure. The read-write terminal has used three microprocessors in all. Each microprocessor completes its function independently. They can make communication each other at the same time. As a whole, they accomplish all functions of IC card read-write terminal. We have thought up a new way to realize the multi-CPU and done the trick in practice. In this way, not only is the hardware circuit simple and are special components unnecessary, but also the communication speed between each CPU is very fast. As the method is very universal and is not limited by the CPU architecture of application system, it can be taken into account in other situations that multi-CPU will be used. The IC card read-write terminal introduced in this paper has made some improvement on the existing manufacture. It is a novel reader/writer terminal with full functions and high performance price ratio.
