The weak signal can be detected by chaotic oscillator owing to its property of sensitive dependence on initial conditions and of immunity from noise. Methods to identifying chaos and intermittent chaos are put forward based on the study on method of weak signal detection by Duffing oscillator. A new method to detecting phase of sinusoidal signals is presented. The influence of the parameters on the system character is demonstrated by the large of charts and tables. The comparison between Duffing method and Fourier method is given. The method is applied to signal detection and fault diagnosis in electric power system, and the result is good when data from laboratory and transformer substation are processed. The detection system is realized in virtual instrument, and some virtual instruments are designed based on this method.
