Semantic Web is emerging as one of the hottest branches of Web research area, and it is hammering heavily at the Web world. On the other hand, Web applications promise to provide users with varieties of capabilities in the form of web services, while hide the details of implementation from them. This thesis combines these two subjects together and focuses on the research of ontology matching algorithms, in the hope that we can make use of the semantic matching results of functional ontology to solve the discovery problem of web services. The initiative researches and the major techniques introduced are as follows:1. The improvement of web ontology matching algorithms, involving the comparison between different versions of ontology and the merging of ontology from different sources2. The semantic enhancement on the description of Web Services;3. The introduction of semantic framework system based on the functional matching of services by means of UDDIThis thesis firstly introduces the background of semantic web and its architecture. It then briefly introduces the key techniques, such as XML(S), RDF(S), ontology, OWL etc. We specially analyze the role of ontology in semantic web, and discuss the comparison algorithms between different version of ontology, and also, the merging algorithms of ontology from different sources. We have made some essential improvement to the algorithms, and also put forward a notation method to the integration of WSDL and ontology. We have applied our research to the UDDI workflow and satisfactorily solved the many problems of traditional keyword-based searching method of UDDI. In addition, we have presented a DUMP framework, which has proved quite valuable from the viewpoint of increasing the semantic level of UDDI to a certain degree.
