Plastic optical fiber (POF), with features of lower cost of installation than glass optical fiber (GOF), higher bandwidth and lower loss than copper wires, and high noise immunity as GOF, becomes the first selection of transmission medium for the short-haul, small and medium capacity communication systems, and one of the important components of all optical networks and Information Highway. Therefore, the research and development (R&D) of high performance application systems of POF would gain wide prospect, and could propel the R&D of POF its own. This paper talks about something about the R&D on application systems of POF. First, an error ratio tester, featured with low cost, multi-speed grades, multi-interfaces, is successfully developed with the platform of electronic design automation technology, and built up the hardware of high speed and density of field programmable gate array into a system on a programmable chip. It is the testing platform for the R&D of POF link and other digital communication links, and provides the prerequisite and basis for R&D of application systems of POF. Second, in as much as low loss windows of POF in the range of the short wavelength, the transceiver, suitable for POF links, is designed, and is tested in performance, compared in cost. This paper presents many schemes for the design of POF transceivers, and collects and summarizes a set of integral materials.Last, the medium converter between twisted pairs and POF is developed by the POF transceiver coupled with the chip of physical layer of fast Ethernet. Therefore the fast Ethernet, based on POF links, is realized. This system has been tested in performance, and gets satisfied result.
