Workflow technology is under fast developing and persistently achieving successful applications in many fields, just like some advanced technologies we have known. As a kernel technology of process modeling and process management, workflow technology can be integrated efficiently with other information systems and be built into a variety of business management systems cater for enterprises. It can build application software system with detail demands of enterprises quickly because of its extremely flexibility. And it can be configured to reengineer business process under information system layer to meeting persist changing requirements of management and production once business process is changed. The studies and research of workflow and its relevant fields keep increasing for its deeply application, thus its research fields and contents are greatly extended. During the research process, a variety of hot fields appeared and also some puzzles and problems occurred. Furthermore, the integration of other real business systems becomes an outstanding problem in order to extend its application.The paper discussed and summarized some pivotal technological problems of workflow, then stepped into its research and proposed some viewpoints and opinions to rich some theories of workflow. Based on the simple introduction of current situation of workflow research, the paper analyzed and summarized modeling technology of workflow, then elementarily categorized workflow models and continued with some relevant description for those.Workflow management system emphasizes the combination of human and application during its operation. Therefore, the paper introduced, analyzed and extended workflow management system based on agent and web. Consequently, the research content is lead to the proposal of some real models, including the one that can be used in negotiable securities. The workflow management system based on web represents a direction of enterprise applications, in which a great deal applications exist and continue increasing. Research in this aspect includes not only introduction of framework, but also cooperative work of applications. The simulation platform of workflow was concerned in the paper, which is still weakness in workflow research fields. An improved virtual environment simulation model was proposed after discussingsome presupposed conditions.In order to promote theoretic research of workflow technology in application, a workflow engine was inducted. iFlow is a lightweight workflow engine, which acts on the rules and specifications made by Workflow Management Coalition and uses a three meta data model to adapt business information system. It turns into a reference example for rapid and efficiency enterprise process by analyzing lots of engine control logic, such as task management, task assignment, form management and transition management, and takes form as application entity during human machine interaction. Finally, the paper proposed a set of security strategies by resolving lots of safety problems in application, and also those strategies were implemented by using a self-developed security component, which directly leads to assurance of information security and extends latent application in many fields.A series of theoretic research and development and application of engine component expands application of workflow technology, which also deepens relevant research subjects. The paper prospected at last for further research aspect of workflow technology based on current achieved research results. Continuous research will be made later and author's main aim is to extend and promote application of workflow technology for business process reengineering.
