The Virtual Reality is one kind of technology that produces a highly vivid simulation environment by using computer to make user immerse into the virtual environment by some kinds of sensor interfaces and accomplish interaction between user and environment. VR technology makes the interaction between human and computer becomes more natural, more advanced. So far, VR technology had been applied to many fields, including military affairs, manufacturing, medical treatment, education, entertainment and so on.Virtual Environment is the representation space of the application of VR, also is a visualization platform that is integrated various technologies. Human interact with virtual world through virtual environment. Hence, how to construct a 3D, highly reality and good interaction virtual environment is an important task for the application of VR technology.This thesis based on computer graphics algorithms, studies all kinds of realistic graphics algorithms and the real-time rendering of realistic graphics. In practice, taking virtual city environment for example, we developed a virtual city walk-through system based on OpenGL. The follows are the main study contents.1. Basic computer realistic graphics algorithms, including illumination model, Raytracing, Radiosity, Texture mapping and so on.2. Shadow plays an important role in 3D Scene. Studying and comparing different shadow algorithms, emphasizing on two prevalent algorithms, Shadow Mapping and Shadow Volume.3. Real-time rendering technology, including IBR, LOD and so on.4. Proposed a design frame of modules for walk-through system of virtual city. Developed system based on OpenGL and some pertinent algorithms.5. Developed graphic interface between OpenGL and modeling software Creator, resolving the problem of rapid modeling.Finally, this thesis summarizes the study work and experience in system development and offers the reference for following development works.
