With the wide spread of various mobile communication, entertainment and data processing devices, more technique of 3-D realistic graphics rendering has been applied in embedded system. Higher screen resolution and better quality for displaying are both required with the development of mobile communication devices. Mobile communication devices have been as an important way of getting information, handling data and personal entertainment for persons. People would like the realistic graphics appearing on their screen in real time, so design needs to implement many functions like 3-D operation interface, 3-D games and 3-D GPS navigation and so on.More and more persons pay attention to the crying for 3-D rendering. Although some simple 3-D realistic graphics rendering function based on the software simulation has been completed, the function still has some shortages like occupying too much CPU resources, increasing CPU power for the complicated algorithm. There are two obvious shortages for the software simulation function; one is low-quality rendering, which implements simple graphic rendering only; the other is low-speed rendering, which cannot implements graphic rendering in real time. For solving these issues, it is necessary to adopt specific hardware circuit to realize the 3-D realistic graphics processing system. The new 3-D realistic graphics processing system for mobile devices should have fast-rendering element, can be responsible for real-time 3-D realistic graphics rendering and have low-power and low-bandwidth attributes to solving the limitation of the battery and memory in mobile device.For meeting the urgent requirements of the 3-D realistic graphics rendering applied in mobile devices and graphics rendering processor, the paper describes the research content for 3-D realistic graphics processing system for mobile device.1) For meeting the requirement of the 3-D realistic graphics rendering and attributes of mobile device, we propose one model and mechanism for 3-D realistic graphics rendering applied in mobile device. The model adopts Vertex Processing Unit (VPU) and a tile-based raster unit. It adopts fixed data-path to simple the complexity of circuit. The tile-based rendering reduces the bandwidth for accessing external memory and thus lower energy consumption.2) Directed towards the requirement of model and mechanism of 3-D realistic graphics rendering, the paper proposes one optimized design for algorithm of hardware, which is used for guiding to hardware design of real 3-D realistic graphics rendering processing system. The algorithm is emulated and verified by C language. According to the verification result, it indicates that all the algorithms have been optimized and implements 3-D realistic graphics rendering greatly.3) Since rendering 3-D realistic graphics needs more complex transformation model and lighting model, a new structure for fitting the three dimension graphics rendering applied in mobile devices is proposed. The processor can update transformation model optionally which be propitious to rendering 3-D realistic graphics. It has four parallel SIMD operation units, a high precision special function unit; eight pipeline stage with data bypass function. The processor has High-speed and high-precision attributes which provides supports to implement real-time 3-D realistic graphics rendering.4) In the paper, we propose implement method of raster unite of rendering based on Tile. This method place depth buffer and color buffer into chip so that reduce the bandwidth of accessing external memory and lower power dissipation.5) The 3-D realistic graphics processor which is mobile devices oriented has been completed under the FPGA platform. An FPGA verification system based on the SOPC is constructed in the paper. Verification result presents that the system can complete 3-D realistic graphics rendering, so it approves the validity for the proposed 3-D realistic graphics model and mechanism.Up until now, the hardware research for the 3-D realistic graphics processor which is mobile devices oriented has been carried out roundly in foreign country and gets achievement in relevant area. Because of key algorithm is as core technology for the company which is manufacturing chip and related to protection of intellectual property rights (IPR), Reference for designing 3-D realistic graphics processor is shortage. In this situation, it is great sense to research model and mechanism of 3-D realistic graphics processor and can help Chinese to get own IPR for graphics processor applied in mobile device.
