It's now exceed the geoscientists' ability to process the increasingly geographic data to some extend. The demand of discovery geographic knowledge from the huge amount of data makes the certain appearance of Spatial Data Mining. Spatial data mining is a branch of Data Mining, and is widely used in Remote Sense and Geographic Information System. Knowledge discovered by spatial data mining in GIS can be used for comprehension of Spatial Data, discovery of knowledge about Spatial Relations, discovery of knowledge about relations between Spatial Data and Property Data, Construction of Spatial Repository, reorganization of Spatial Database, optimization of Spatial Query and so on. Thus make GIS play an important role in investigating, evaluation, and monitoring of resources, city management and planning, administration, spatial decision, evaluation and predication of disaster, cadastre management and land exploitation, traffic, agriculture, police and etc. Many methods are used to spatial data mining. As Spatial Knowledge is essentially qualitative, Spatial Reasoning, especially Qualitative Spatial Reasoning, becomes an important and efficient method of spatial data mining, and also becomes a hotspot of research in recent years. It's very useful to research, analyze and discuss spatial data mining and qualitative spatial reasoning. It is greatly significative both in scholarship and practicality to digitalize city planning, construction, management and services, and to accelerate the development of GIS.The research work in this Dissertation is part work of the Tenth National Five-Year Plan of Ministry Science and Technology (No. 2002BA107B). The main contents of this Dissertation are as follows:First, we introduced the characteristics of spatial data mining, types of knowledge that can be discovered, knowledge representation methods, the structure of mining system and system development strategy. Also by showing an instance, we gave a spatial data mining method, which combines Genetic Algorithms and Rough Set together.Second, spatial reasoning and qualitative spatial reasoning are presented.Following this, we give attention to an important method of spatial data mining - qualitative spatial reasoning. Qualitative representation and reasoning of topological relations and directional relations are given in detail respectively. And qualitative reasoning of directional relation based on Space with Neutral Zone, with the theorem that is satisfied, is also presented. Based on this, a qualitative representation model of spatial relations, SR representation model, which combines qualitative representation of topological relations and directional relations, is given. The Constraint Rules between RCC8 and directional relations in Space with Neutral Zone are also given.Finally, based on the research work above, we developed a prototype system, which realized the modules such as qualitative reasoning of directional relations. And the system also provides Spatial Query function for spatial data mining.
