With the rapid and extensive development of wireless communication and internet, it has been substantially essential to acquire information and communicate with other people at anytime, anywhere and for anybody. The ability to be set up quickly and operate without wired infrastructure makes Ad Hoc network a promising candidate for next generation wireless networks. Research on Ad Hoc from various aspects is now a hot spot in literature. In this thesis we will mainly study the architecture of Ad Hoc network and routing protocol for Ad Hoc network. We focus on three issues in this thesis: the capacity region and capacity of Ad Hoc network, routing protocol for Ad Hoc network and one implementation practice of Ad Hoc network: virtual network card based on Bluetooth technology.Firstly, with the introduction of Ad Hoc network capacity region defined by Stavros Toumpis, we make investigation on the impact of multi-hop routing on the capacity region of Ad Hoc network based on two facts. Also, we extend the capacity region to energy constrained Ad Hoc network. After plenty of simulation and analysis, such conclusion can be drew: Multi-hop routing can increase Ad Hoc network capacity in two ways: data are frequently transmitted via wireless links less interfered and congested; as for energy constrained Ad Hoc network, more node energy are utilized by forwarding packets for other nodes. Furthermore, we propose an Energy and Bandwidth Based Routing Protocol (EBBRP) for Ad Hoc network. EBBRP aims at lengthening network lifetime as well as increasing Ad Hoc network capacity, by utilizing network resources effectively. This routing protocol tries to avoid network split by consuming node energy effectively, meanwhile it takes link bandwidth into consideration in case of networkcongestion. Through plenty of simulation on NS2, EBBRP shows good performance on network lifetime, packet delay and network capacity.Another aspect of our work is to implement a Virtual Network Card based on Bluetooth technology. In this project, we wrap a Bluetooth device unit as network card by integrating Bluetooth protocol stack and network driver. This paved the way to deploy Bluetooth Ad Hoc network.
