With the great progress of network technology, information resource is growing explosively. The traditional storage technology, which attaches on network servers, does not meet the needs of applications any more. It is becoming an urgent requirement to find a new kind of storage architecture. Network storage technologies, such as NAS (Network-Attached Storage)&SAN (Storage Area Network), which separate storage resources from network servers, is gradually becoming a popular research field. This paper is part of the National 973 Key project for "Fundamental study on novel ultra-high density and ultra-high speed optical information storage and processing". Upon the profound research on the NAS technology, a modularized network-attached storage system has been implemented, which the concept of modularization design is used. The approach presented in this paper includes two parts. One is the modularization design and implementation of a NAS system. The other is a Web-based management platform, specifically designed for the remotely administrating NAS appliance. NetBench and NetPIPE software were used to evaluate the performance of this NAS system. The result shows that, in 100M network, when the system is accessed by 28 client engines simultaneously, the peak throughput of our NAS is about 78Mb/s, thus the server no longer is the bottleneck. Moreover, the popular SSL security module was added into the NAS system, establishing the secure tunnel between the clients and the NAS system. The security problem of transmitted data on network has been solved. Based upon the work mentioned above, we deeply researched the Linux-based CD image technology. And a practical NAS device, modularized CD image server, was implemented. Thus the CD data can be shared on network. The performance of the CD image server was evaluated by test the accessing rate of CD data. The result shows the performance of our CD image server is superior to that of traditional sharing CD devices.
