Recently, with the development of railage, passenger transport, freight and the density of train have increased mostly. It results in rail-wear day after day, especially the side rail-wear. So the Ministry of Railway has been taking the situation of rail into account greatly to insure train and rail safely. Among all the parameters that display the loss of rail, head wear of is one of the most primary parameters. When the rail-wear exceeds the limitation, the rail must be replaced or repaired. So, it is very important for the maintenance security of the rail and railway to measure rail-wear precisely and speedily and this problem is still an important research subject of which the Ministry of Railway in every nation has to be in face.This paper has introduced the developing background of the automatic measurement system for rail-wear and the present situation of the automatic measurement technology for rail-wear firstly, point out the necessity of developing the automatic measurement system for rail-wear. To counter the requirement of measurement time and precise of the system, the paper advanced the general plan of system design that binarization, thinning, calibration of camera and adjustment of image are improved a lot so that they can be suited to the systematic requirement. This paper illustrated the key technical links of system measurement one by one and carefully introduces the realizing process of the calibration of camera. At last through the analysis of the result of the measurement this paper points out the focal point that needs to be improved.
