In recent years, with the rapid development of high-speed railway and the grate increase in the capacity of trains for passengers and goods, the rail abrasion becomes a serious problem. However, the rail wear is currently measured by contact measurement in most cases, it is necessary to develop an automatic system for measuring the rail wear. Now there are some researches on steel rail abrasion measurement based on monocular vision in domestic. The steel rail abrasion measurement based on binocular vision was put forward in this thesis to against the shortcomings of monocular vision. After the deep analysis of the key technology, the measurement of steel rail abrasion was implemented.A new non-contact steel rail abrasion measurement method based on binocular vision was proposed in this thesis. Based on analysis of many kinds of calibration methods, a template suitable for steel rail abrasion measurement environment was designed. Meanwhile accurate calibration of system was achieved by the randomized Hough transform feature point detection and Tsai two-step algorithms. On this basis, image pretreatment and matching measurement modules suitable for my system were designed. Finally, steel rail profile abrasion measurement system was implemented which employs the stereo matching and 3-D reconstruction technology..In this thesis, all kinds of camera calibration technology was researched firstly, then the detailed framework of this system was designed, which includes system calibration, pretreatment of image, Contour Reduction and matching measurement modules. At the end of this paper, a steel rail abrasion measurement system named AbrasionMeasurement1.0 was implemented, using which some experiments were conducted. The experiment result suggested that this system can accomplish the expected steel rail abrasion measurement task. Meanwhile its accuracy could be up to 0.5mm, which can meet the application requirement. This system is non-contact, fast, smart and visual displayed. In this paper, the results of research proposed a workable solution for steel rail abrasion measurement of high-speed railway in China.
