Being an important piece of sorting equipment, the system for removing foreign bodies in tobacco flows has a bright prospect of being widely applied. With the development of science and technology, automatic inspection and control in tobacco manufacturing has been an important subject both at home and aboard.Rest upon the present status of study and application of this system, defects of domestic manual sorting and specified equipment as well as the significance of developing such a system are discoursed in this thesis. After analysis and comparison, a concise but highly efficient method of accurate recognition and location of foreign bodies in tobacco flows is presented, and a sample machine in principle for real-time recognition and automatic rejection is designed, according to tobacco together with its foreign bodies ' color and consistency. Experiments on the sample machine's capability of real-time recognition and its efficiency show that this system is obviously superior to domestic equipment of the same sort in rejecting a wider variety of foreign bodies. The system is not only more stable but also greatly cuts down operating stuff and maintenance cost besides its original price.The main contents of the thesis are shown as follows: presenting fundamental theories of statistic pattern recognition, discussing RGB (Red, Green, Blue) color space, Ohta color space, HSI (Hue, Saturation, Intensity) color space and its converted color space, materials consistency in gray scale and the application in removing foreign bodies in tobacco flows, hence presenting recognition pattern based on "Unit Recognition", designing sample machine for this purpose, which consists of material-providing system, optic system, image-grabbing system, real-time intelligent image-processing system and systems of automatically rejecting foreign bodies and self-diagnosis, analyzing and optimizing hard wares, offering concrete designs such as optic system and air-ejector driver circuit, presenting and realizing physical RAMdirect peroration and double buffer technology, besides, discussing highly precise minimum second level timing under Windows 2000 and adoption of C Language in this system to compose all the soft wares in SDK controlling the whole system under Windows 2000.Experiments on the sample machine in principle show that the system can meet the real-time demand in tobacco manufacturing and that the foreign bodies' recognition pattern based on "Unit Recognition" is feasible. Being original, highly efficient and practical, the system ensures lower cost, less labor intensity and better products after being improved.
